I started Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng on September 14th, 2019 and promptly finished it the next day. I read Everything I Never Told You by Ng in 2018 and had a similar experience. Little Fires Everywhere is a sweeping story of a perfectly normal family in Shaker Heights, Ohio, where Ng grew up, and a second family, a different type of normal, that comes into their lives and shakes things up.
Ng’s writing is captivating, authentic, and incredibly moving. You will find yourself experiencing nearly every emotion about and for every character. At one point or another, I was angry, sad, laughing, crying, proud, and filled with anxiety. What makes Ng’s writing so captivating is the authenticity. Elena Richardson could be any upper-middle-class woman in any town in the United States. I know many Elenas and Mias and Pearls.
If you enjoy stories about everyday people in everyday situations, Little Fires Everywhere is for you. Given that this exact type of story is my favorite type of fiction to both read and write, I will be coming back to Little Fires Everywhere again and again.
